OUR COMMUNITY CAFÉ
Are women responsible for stalling their leadership progress?
Rochester, NY— June 11, 2013 Legacy Women Institute International (LWII) launches its newest forum, Our Community Café in partnership with the American Association of University Women (AAUW). According to Dr. Cofield, founder and President, “A conversation provides a powerful way to make a difference in our world, to build community, and to enhance collective intelligence. We are excited about our partnership with the Diversity Team of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) where Our Community Café will be hosted monthly and will cover a wide range of topics relevant to women. The first topic will cover one of the top issues women face as described by Sandberg in her book LEAN IN.”
According to Sheryl Sandberg, author of LEAN IN, women’s progress in achieving leadership roles has stalled. In her book, she explains the root causes, and offers compelling, commonsense solutions that can empower women to achieve their full potential.
Our Community Cafe participants will explore, in café style, the nature of the problem, why something different must be done, and what role women can play to recast this future. They will explore whose responsibility it is to level the playing field for women. Dr. Cofield, in collaboration with other conscientious women including Kathy Roth, Mary Myers, and Heidi Parreño, will facilitate a series of LEAN IN conversations at Our Community Café.
“I believe very deeply in the talent of women” says Kathy Roth, founder of Waterstone Partners, “ this forum will provide women with a place to share ideas, understand the obstacles, take action, and build relationships.”

Hosted in partnership with the Diversity Team at the AAUW, Our Community Cafe is a learning forum designed to promote connections and conversations that lead to community awareness and possibilities. Experience community in an inviting climate in which everyone is inspired to learn from diverse perspectives on a wide range of topics. Men and women are welcomed to join the conversation.
Dr Melody Cofield, Our Community Café founder, believes Rochester continues to be fertile ground for innovation and creativity. “A good face-to-face conversation about meaningful issues of our lives is a satisfying experience and plants the seeds for potential solutions.
“We are looking to have a diverse perspective from different circles of our community. We hope the topics will inspire new thinking about existing issues and will be transported by participants to circles of their families and friends. We hope they are so positively provoked that they will turn conversation into action.” says Heidi Parreño, Diversity Chair for AAUW.
Our Community Café (Lean In for Women in Leadership) will meet Thursday, June 11, 2013 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at AAUW at the Perkins Mansion, 494 East Avenue. Registration is requested through www.ourcommunitycafe.com. Free with a suggested donation of $10 to defray the costs.
